The Community of Christ joined the ranks of Christian churches ordaining women with the approval of Doctrine and Covenants section 156 in 1984: "Do not wonder that some women of the church are being called to priesthood responsibilities. This is in harmony with my will" (paragraph 9c). While this document flung wide the doors for women to fully participate in every aspect of church life, it did not come without significant negative reaction, repercussion, and clearly stated concerns.
What is the reality of women's roles as ministers and leaders in the church today? What does the transition of women into priesthood tell us about the Community of Christ's organizational culture? Has the ordination of women impacted the patriarchal hierarchy and if so how? How can an organization committed to the pursuit of peace, reconciliation, healing of the spirit, and the worth of all persons engage in self-assessment and respond proactively in ways that model Christian community in leadership practices? How do the personal stories of women holding priesthood in the Community of Christ inform the journey of a people seeking to be faithful to the mission of God? [From the article]
