Inouye discusses what is like being a buddhist, animist and postmodern Mormon. In the Japanese case, spirituality is often broad and generous. The Japanese have been notably syncretic when it comes to appreciating various forms of religious inspiration. It is not unusual to be both Buddhist and animist at the same time. One might argue that this sort of openness suggests a lack rather than an abundance of religious devotion, that it ignores what distinguishes one religion from another.
