The article presents a case study examining the roles of the physical and social landscape of the Four Corners area of the U.S. Southwest in the 1884 deaths of miners Samuel Walcott James McNally. Particular focus is given to conflicts between white settlers and Navajo residents and to the difficulties which the landscape of this isolated area presented to law enforcement officials.
