[2014 Mormon Historical Association Winner for Article Award of Excellence]
The article discusses the problematic racial past of Mormonism and the evolution of the Divine-Curse Doctrine. Highlights of an interview by Brigham Young University Religion Professor Randy Bott with Washington Post reporter Jason Horowitz on February 28, 2012 are presented. It is said that the divine curse started in ancient Israel when Jews, Christians, and Muslims interpreted the Bible, suggesting that God had cursed dark-skinned people for disobeying his teachings. Church dictum states that the First Presidency has the exclusive right to authorize and interpret doctrine.
