[2013 John Whitmer Historical Association winner for Best Historical Article]
The article discusses the life of classicist Charles Anthon, who was sought by early Mormon convert Martin Harris to assess the translation of a document purportedly revealed by an angel to Mormon founder Joseph Smith. Letters written by Anthon to author E. D. Howe, pastor T. W. Coit, and the newspaper "New York Observer" are presented, all of which deny that Anthon had declared the allegedly Reformed Egyptian hieroglyphic writing presented by Harris to be authentic. It is said that Anthon believed Harris to be the victim of a hoax, while slightly modifying his account of the encounter in subsequent letters.
