Utah Place Names : A Comprehensive Guide to the Origin of Geographic Names

"Utah is a wonderfully endowed state that is enjoyed by the tourist, business person, and permanent resident. The state's secular and religious history, geography, geology, natural history, and people are fascinating and varied enough to satisfy the most adventurous explorer or average citizen. But, this is not a book extolling the varieties and beauties of Utah, it is a compilation of the origins of the geographic names of the state. Sadly, the origin of many of these stories are not compiled in a single reference. They are scattered in hundreds of isolated books and journals, in the dim memories of third and fourth generations, and in the legends and stories told by sheepherders and cattlemen who roam Utah's vast regions. This book is a tardy attempt to rectify some of these problems by putting this neglected historical information into a single reference." [Author]
