"During the first years of settlement, the Utah pioneers were in agreement that there could be no division of thought or action if The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was to survive. Had the Saints been able to maintain this ideal condition, their problems during the remaining years of the nineteenth century would have been relatively few. But as time passed, dissension began to appear in the form of Gentile businessmen who were eager to capitalize on the economic needs of the fast-growing community, and by the later '60s friction had developed to a point that a few men, all anti-Mormon, proceeded to organize a political party which eventually became known as "Liberal," the prime purpose of which was to oppose the civic control of the Mormons in Utah. This action, together with unfavorable legislation pending in Congress, only served to draw the Saints closer together." [Author] This article accounts the actions of the corrupt government and the responses of the Saints to these actions.
