Charles Rich Snelgrove was born in Salt Lake City on June 30, 1887, in a small, rented adobe cottage located at 633 South West Temple Street. His father, Charles Richard Snelgrove, was born in Salt Lake City, September 4, 1858, of good, devoted Mormon parents in their family home, located at about 335 East Second South. His mother, Emily Brooksbank, was born on October 20, 1862, in Leeds, Pontifrac, Yorkshire, England. Charles Richard and Emily were married in Salt Lake City, May 27, 1886.? Charles Rich was the oldest of eight children, five sons and three daughters.
Rich, as he liked to be called experienced only limited activity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a youth. During a diphtheria epidemic in 1894, he was administered to by his bishop, Harrison Sperry and a counselor, Brother Madson and was immediately healed.
