"Through periodic publication of old correspondence such as that comprising this chapter, much precise, accurate and statistical information is added to the annals of western history. In many of these precious manuscripts - for such they are - the writers tell of their families; sometimes of the cities and countries from which they came; questions are asked and answered. The letters from Nauvoo present the lay pioneer story, and provide firsthand knowledge not only of living conditions in that beautiful city, but of some of the tribulations the Saints were forced to undergo before their expulsion. Letters sent to and from - and within - the valleys of the Rocky Mountains speak of the memorable settlement of Deseret; of the yearning family members for word from their loved ones. Those from missionaries tell of their progress in bringing new converts into the fold, or of their experiences in settling barren outposts in far-flung areas of Mormon country. Some were written to future travelers to Zion, acquainting them with articles that would be needed on their journey across the plains and in their new home." [Author]
