The article discusses protests against race discrimination in Brigham Young University's (BYU's) intercollegiate athletic program during the late 1960s and early 1970s. According to the author, protesters saw BYU as a symbol of discrimination both within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and within American society at large. Details on tensions within the BYU community over the school's racial policies are also presented. Other topics include BYU president Ernest L. Wilkinson, boycotts of BYU athletic events, and the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964.
