After a tense history with the United States government before Utah gained its statehood, many Utahns fought as part of the military in units known as the "Utah Batteries" during the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars. This article relates more about the history of Utahns and the United States military, noting particularly the new opportunity offered to them to fight for the United States as citizens of a newly-formed state.
