Mormons in the Salt Lake Valley and throughout the rest of Utah often created and used large, or "mammoth", flags to celebrate special occasions or holidays, such as July 4th and 24th, Pioneer Day. When Utah was finally granted admittance as a state of the United States of America, another "mammoth" flag was created to showcase the newly added 45th star. Though it took another few months to create and determine the official pattern of the 45 stars in the American flag, Utah's citizens still created their own version for the statehood celebration in 1896. Since then, the display of the American flag has been a regular practice in places such as the Tabernacle on Temple Square, and even on the south side of the Salt Lake Temple until 1903.
