This article focuses on the assemblage of people who became Mormon in Boston in the early 1830s in one of the most highly developed urban religious cultures in America. By focusing on this first group, the author hopes to show the costs, boundaries, and dynamism of the phenomenon of Mormon religious conversion. "Conversion" and "convert" are charged concepts within religious studies - often because of the evangelical Protestant assumptions that have built up around the terms. For scholars, these assumptions tend to emphasize sharp breaks at the expense of continuities. The author uses "conversion" and "convert" because these terms are native to the sources and was the way people spoke of Mormon religious change at the time within and outside of the religious movement.
