In the United States, Mormon studies scholars have identified the shift from marginalized sect to respected denomination as the "Americanization" of Mormonism, a process that occurred from 1890 to the mid-twentieth century. The withdrawal of official authorization for new plural marriages, the abandonment of the Mormon Peoples' Party in favor of affiliation with the national parties, and the adoption of free market capitalism were signs of this integration. Assimilation and "Americanization" reduced Mormon/non-Mormon antagonisms and allowed the new religion to thrive. However, the concept of "Americanization" overshadows Mormonism in regions outside the United States during this time. To understand the Canadian Mormon experience against the backdrop of this story of integration, I will examine the Canadian religious and geographic landscapes with particular focus on southern, rural Alberta, and sacred spaces, such as the meetinghouse, tabernacle, and temple. The question driving this article is: What does architecture reveal about Mormonism in Canada during the period of assimilation? [From the article]
