This article will conduct a comparative examination of early Mormon temple worship an the revivalism of Charles Finney, hereafter refered to as Finneyite revivalism. By closely comparing these two distinctive forms of Christian adoration, it will become apparent that the Mormons who gathered for the Kirtland Temple dedication were fully intent on repudiating their surrounding evangelical milieu. Whereas Finneyite revivalism reinforced the individualistic, egalitarian, and forward-looking attitudes that were so pervasive in nineteenth century America, Mormon temple worship was instead a celebration of religious ritual, restoration, and hierarchy, three features that were sharply at odds with mainstream American culture. Rejecting the pragmatic, results-oriented revivalism of Finney and his disciples, Mormons like Benjamin Brown wished to plant the ancient practices of the Old and New Testaments, as they understood them, squarely in the nineteenth century.
