In this article, the author shares his experiences of attending a Southern Jewish Historical Association's conference and how a good portion of the audience consisted of community members who "come because they care deeply about their collective history and are there to remember, honor, and connect with the past." This experience as well as similar experiences attending Mormon History conferences led the author to asking: What is the relationship between scholars and his or her subjects? What rights and responsibilities do the scholar and his or her subjects have in relationship to one another? How might we talk about Mormon historians' relationship with the ecclesiastical communities that have a special stake in their writing and teaching of that history? [From the article]
