Mercy Partridge Whitney was one of the first Protestant (Congregational) missionaries in Hawaii, arriving in 1820 with her husband, Samuel, and serving there until her death in 1872. In 1854 she received a visit from her nephew, Edward Partridge Jr., who was also serving a mission, but for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The two disagreed on many points of doctrine, including polygamy and the role of grace and works in salvation. Mercy disapproved of Edward's living among native Hawaiians, and the visit was not cordial. Edward returned for a second mission in 1882 and visited her grave, reminiscing about their visit.
