What did Mormon activity in Finland entail during the years 1840 to 1900? How did various societal actors react to Mormon activity? How can these actions be understood in light of sociological theory? These are the three research questions Kim Östman set out to answer in his doctoral dissertation. 1840 was chosen because it was the year when the first known mention of Mormonism—established as a church 10 years previously—was mad in the Finnish press. 1900 marks the end of 25 years of intermittent and (it would seem) increasingly half-hearted Mormon missionary activity in Finland, an activity not taken up again until after the Second World War.
