Much of our approach to ritual is influenced by Western culture, particularly Judeo-Christian practices and beliefs. Yet during the same time periods, Asian cultures performed ritual and established their own meanings for ritual. One significant difference between the two is the manner in which the body and spirit are understood to relate to one another. While traditional Judeo-Christian belief proposes an antagonistic relationship between spirit and body, which in turn influences our appreciation, or lack of appreciation, for our ritual experience, Mike Ing suggests that the Buddhist understanding of ritual and its relationship between body and spirit has more in common with Latter-day Saint concepts of salvation than one would think.
