The article discusses the thought of Mormon Church founder Joseph Smith, Jr. in light of Romantic philosophy. It is said that Romantic elements of Smith's thought seem to conflict with legalistic elements. The thought of astronomer William Herschel and that of philosopher Edmund Burke are addressed, noting Herschel's views on chaos and the ongoing nature of creation and the aesthetic views of Burke regarding the sublime. The notion of the universe as tragic is discussed, while Smith's views on sin, law, and covenant are noted.
