In recent decades the field of early Christian studies has moved away from its earlier sectarian interests and even from theology as the primary lens through which early Christian history is studied. As a result, scholars have abandoned frameworks like the apostasy narrative for depicting early Christianity. Hybridized identity has replaced the once imagined purity of early Christianity. More sophisticated methods of comparison have replaced the apologetic search for parallels between past and present. Further, contemporary communities invested in theological and normative reflections have adopted hermeneutical frameworks to consider meanings of early Christian history. Reassessing early Christianity in light of these recent scholarly developments raises important questions for Mormon representations of early Christianity and their function in the Mormon historical imagination.
