In this chapter I will reevaluate the common perceptions of Jewish apostasy in the time of Jesus in order to encourage a more accurate, nuanced, and sympathetic understanding of this important period. To accomplish this I will first survey the ways in which Latter-day Saints have perceived the spiritual state of first-century Judaism and will identify the sources that helped form this perception. For the sake of historical clarity I will then reconsider some of the common charges made against Jews in the time of Jesus in light of modern scholarship and suggest some ways in which the Jewish world of the New Testament can be reconceptualized in light of Latter-day Saint scripture.
