In this chapter, the author introduces the comparison between Joseph Smith and Muhammad. Both men founded a new religion, produced new scripture, gathered a body of loyal followers, blended temporal and spiritual, and later - had more than one wife. Early comparisons were superficial at best and often based on inaccurate information. Thus, the comparative study of Mormonism cries out for a sustained and substantive engagement with Islam. Among the many comparisons possible, this chapter offers a close examination of Joseph Smith and Muhammad. In particular, it focuses on how their respective followers came to define the role of prophet, how they assessed the relative authoritativeness of the prophet's words, and how community memory of the prophet's life influenced in various ways both religoius precept and praxis.
