John Alexander Dowie, the author's test case, serves to epitomize the image of Pentecostalism and suggests that this movement came by its flamboyant, emotionally charged practices quite naturally. Colorful, and always controversial, at the height of his popularity Dowie made national headlines almost daily. Although Dowie himself never became Pentecostal, thousands of his followers - including hundreds in leadership roles - would leave his organization to join the emerging Pentecostal movement. Today, many Pentecostal churches in North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and especially South Africa trace their origins to this engimatic man. What most of their congregants do not know is how deeply Dowie drew on Mormon faith and practice during the latter half of his ministry. [excerpt from chapter]
