This modern Samson story began when Porter Rockwell, long-haired and bedraggled after several months in a Missouri prison, stumbled unexpected into a Christmas party given by Joseph Smith at the Mansion House in Nauvoo, Illinois. He had fled the Mormon society shortly after he and the Mormon prophet were sought as suspects in the attempted murder of Governor Boggs of Missouri. Lonely in Philadelphia and longing for some word of confidence from his prophet leader, Porter contacted Joseph by letter through a mutual friend. [From the text]
