The essays in this section all concern history, especially Mormon folk history or the way Mormons have conceptualized the past and memorialized Mormon leaders and early converts in storytelling, song, and local celebrations. The lore examined in this section circulates mostly outside the official channels of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which does a great deal to foster a historical consciousness among its members with preferred, and in some cases literally canonized, versions of the First Vision, the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, and the restoration of the church and the priesthood.
