January 3, 1885 to February 24, 1885. Penrose keeps this journal as he journeys to the East Coast to campaign for Utah statehood. He first travels to New York, then to Washington, D.C., and back to New York. Penrose makes lengthy daily entries as he describes in great detail his attempts to meet and convince President Grover Cleveland to grant Utah statehood. He also writes of a shady deal that nearly defrauds him (and the LDS Church) of $20,000. While campaigning, Penrose records the difficulties of dodging U.S. Marshal Elwin A. Ireland, who is trying to arrest Penrose on a cohabitation charge; receiving a surprise mission call to England; and meeting with the leading women's suffragists of the day. He also takes the opportunity while in the East to attend meetings of many different faiths, discussing the day's sermon in his diary and occasionally contrasting it with his personal beliefs.
