December 1844 to September 1845. Taylor discusses the period immediately following the death of Joseph Smith. Much of the journal discusses official actions taken by the Nauvoo Town Council with some references to mundane activities. Taylor also explains the purpose of the Mormons' public relations missionaries, ascribing the mission to the presence of non-Mormons who go under the guise of Mormons to misrepresent them. Also, Taylor records the letter sent by some of the Twelve to the governors of the varied states asking where the Mormons ought to go. Taylor further records visions had by himself and a former Methodist about the coming restoration and about the completion of the Nauvoo Temple. Taylor also discusses the conflict between the William Smith and the rest of the Twelve, especially in regards to the succession crisis. Lucy Mack Smith's vision giving William Smith the right to prophetic succession is also related in detail. The journal ends in September 1845 with a call by the Twelve to arm themselves again.
