This article discusses the transforming accounts of the First Vision by Joseph Smith and his associates who recorded the different accounts. The author believes that where the accounts differ are "best understood by viewing the accounts as theological, rather than strictly as historical narratives." It is proposed that the "changing character portrays Smith's continually expanding understanding about God." The author proceeds to do comparisons of all accounts of the first vision to emphasize the growth of Joseph Smith in each of the accounts and what could be learned by the study of the accounts as a form of theological growth in Joseph Smith.
