November 2, 1857 to March 7, 1858. Crosby describes her life as a missionarys wife on the Island of Tubuai in the Pacific. She begins her journal when she is waiting for their return ship to come. After it arrives, she describes conditions on the ship while traveling to San Francisco, California. They stay in San Francisco three weeks, after which her husband Alma is offered a job in San Jose, California. She mentions spiritualism in San Francisco, as many of her friends believe in it. She records July 4 activities in San Jose. On November 2, 1857, Crosbys husband is called to Salt Lake City because Johnstons army is headed to Utah. Ezra Taft Benson visits them when returning from a European mission. En route to Utah, their wagon becomes stuck, their goods are stolen, and an oxen is killed (Crosby believed that the Indians had done it). In February 1858, she mentions meeting Colonel Thomas Kane, though he was initially introduced under the pseudonym, Dr. Osborn.
