March 12, 1856 to September 21, 1857. Hunsaker is called on a mission to colonize Carson Valley, Nevada. He trades his farm to Archibald Gardner for some draft animals. While he is traveling to Carson Valley, his mother accompanies him to Salt Lake City. Orson Hyde refers Hunsaker and Joseph Murdock to a plot of land, which they buy. Hunsaker saves a Strangite from the winter cold. He describes the baptism of some Native American children, referring to them as his Lamanite or Nephite. In June 1857, men come into Carson looking for gold. Hunsaker mentions Mormon perceptions that the United States government plans to annihilate them. In September 1857, Brigham Young tells Hunsaker and Murdock to return to Utah. Hunsaker expects 3000 U.S. soldiers to invade the Salt Lake Valley. When he arrives in Salt Lake City, Church leaders are forming a blockade to prepare for the coming federal army.
