Jessee assesses the importance of a recently discovered letter, dated 23 January 1829. He holds that it confirms that the Smiths were 'involved in the pre-1830 events that their histories described years later.' Moreover, it demonstrates Lucy's above average literary ability, her knowledge of Book of Mormon details prior to its translation into English including information from the so-called 116 lost manuscript pages, the family's early commitment to Joseph's religious mission, and other miscellanious information.
