The scriptural canon of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) includes a book entitled The Doctrine and Covenants. The fourteenth verse of Section 82 deals with the development of societies and communities. It states, Zion must increase in beauty and in holiness. There have been innumerable discourses on holiness, but few regarding beauty. The lack of attention to theological and philosophical foundations of beauty has allowed the building culture within the LDS society to follow the same relativist path as the rest of the world. The LDS Church currently builds standardized functional meetinghouses to maximize cost efficiency and respect donations. While honorable, this standardization and modernization has left much wanting in the areas of beauty and civic decorum. This paper will reunite the LDS people with their building heritage and provide for them a greater understanding of the role of architecture in the civic art. [Authors abstract]
