22 April 1857 to 9 May 1858. With much celebration, Gardner and about seventy other men leave Salt Lake City in handcarts. The first section of Gardners diary simply gives distances traveled and landmarks passed. He serves in the Eastern States mission and stays in the Midwest. He is heckled by anti-Mormons in Port Sarnia and is saddened that many of the people he contacts think the Gospel is a Book. He is frequently denied lodging because of his religion, but keeps busy preaching and baptizes several people. Gardner becomes sick and pulls a piece of wood out of his leg. The leg had been wounded on the trip out of Utah. He starts back home.
