"Retrospective at first. Born in Salt Lake City, 1857. Worked for self by 1871. Bakery, brickmaking, fathers farm, many odd jobs. Some schooling. Volunteered to go to Arizona settlement, 1876. Daily account of journey to Arizona, starting 1 February 1876. Slow progress. Sickness. Arrived 30 March. (This is a hard looking country.) Chopped trees for foundation of house. Grubbed, plowed, harrowed, cut logs for stockade, hauled dirt and brush for dam, hunted, worked on cookhouse. To Kanab for provisions. Visited Lot Smith s camp. Clerk in storehouse. Many meetings. Recreation, parties. Arranged to return to Utah, January 1877. (to know that I am going home for certain makes me feel awful good.) Departure for Kanab."
