"Important due to authors detailed daily entries and his position as secretary to the President of the Mormon Church. References to meetings of Council of Twelve. Letters sent and received. Meetings and sermons, including many stake conferences: Handled many routine matters for First Presidency. Lobbyist in Washington on two occasions. President of Kanab Stake, in absentia for several years. Virtually every problem, including many domestic differences and financial problems, that came officially to attention of First Presidency. In 1879 President John Taylor said he was not willing to submit to the influences of the adversary, as he condemned round dances. Interesting meeting in Provo discusses Joseph Smith's views on the Negro and the Priesthood (pp. 289-93). At one meeting George Q. Cannon reported seeing the Bear Lake Monster or something of that kind." Much temple work; author often acts as recorder. Gaps: 1885-87; January 1894 to 28 July 1899; 5 July 1901 to 2 January 1903; and 21 June to 17 December 1893." [Abstract from Davis Bitton's Guide to Mormon Diaries and Autobiograpies]
