The Diary of Charles Alfred Harper
-
11 April 1847 to 12 September 1847. Harper leaves Winter Quarters, Nebraska in Brigham Youngs initial wagon company, in Heber Kimballs division. Harper works as a wheelwright in the company, and head cook for his group of ten. They pass a Sioux village, Chimney Rock and other sites. Brigham Young organizes and councils the company. He is initially pleased with their behavior, but after several weeks strongly rebukes them for a variety of unruliness. The company covenants to forsake their evil ways. Several horses are shot by accident. The company arrives in Salt Lake Valley and begins to lay out the city.
