December 26, 1850 to January 22, 1856. Farmer is called as a home missionary after his wife dies. He moves to Leicester, where he preaches in halls, churches, and homes. He has some success, but faces stiff opposition. He is stoned, harassed, and pelted by wet salt. Within the Church, an argument over the use of sugar and butter escalates until the matter is brought before the area president and council. Shortly after, Farmer immigrates to the US on the Ellen Maria. He records birth, deaths, and marriages while at sea. He arrives in New Orleans and sails on to Keokuk, Iowa. Farmer joins the Gates company and crosses the Plains, noting distance traveled, place camped, deaths, and interactions with other companies. After reaching Salt Lake, he marries Harriet Bateman, whose death after childbirth is meticulously recorded. Farmer goes to Ogden looking for work and while he is gone, his baby daughter dies. November 2, 1855 to November 3, 1856. Farmer labors in Ogden. He marries Sarah Broadbridge, and joins a territorial survey of the Oquirrh Valley. He needs work, so he continues on with the survey company, traversing from the Salt Lake to the Sevier Valleys. Farmer helps lay out townships.
