April 8, 1847 to September 7, 1847. Egan crosses the plains with the first pioneer company. He notes the weather, landscape, distance traveled, trail sermons, and buffalo. Egan was a member of Heber C. Kimballs family through adoption, and the two frequently interact. He records an exhortation by Kimball about camp behavior and a later speech given privately to members of Kimballs family, as well as Brigham Youngs sermons on excessive hunting and camp behavior. Egan spends hours in the water helping wagons cross the Platte. He mentions meeting Jim Bridger and discussing the Salt Lake Valley, holding a low opinion of Bridger. He also writes about the outbreak of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Egan arrives in the Salt Lake Valley, describing it in detail. He commences planting crops, hauling lumber, and building a house for Ellen Sauders, Kimballs wife. Egan attends the August 1847 Bowery meeting, adding Thomas Bullocks minutes to his own observations. He begins the return trip to Winter Quarters, Nebraska with the Brigham Young Company and is placed in charge of Kimballs provisions. November 18, 1849 to February 23, 1850. Most of this diary was previously published as Howard Egan's Diary From Fort Utah to California in Journals of Forty-Niners: Salt Lake to Los Angeles by Le Roy R Hafen and Ann W. Hafen. This version includes Egans travel from Los Angeles to Sacramento. January 1, 1855 to July 1, 1855. The third diary consists of extracts chosen to reflect Egans cattle dealings. September 19, 1855 to September 29, 1855. Egan returns to California, after boasting he could make the trip from Salt Lake to Los Angeles via mule in ten days. He notes little more than places and times camped in this diary.
