"What follows is a history of the life of Joseph Angell Young based upon a compilation of documents: letters, journals, newspaper and magazine articles, histories, and personal memoirs. Some are in his own words and some are by those who knew him or thought they knew him. As a consequence, included are some references that raise questions - about his character, about their accuracy - which remain unanswered but are still included because along with the facts of Josephs life, they comprise a shadow-self that he left behind. Necessarily interwoven with this documentation of his life is the historical context in which he lived. Joseph Angell Young was born on October 14, 1834, in Kirtland, Geauga County, Ohio, and was the eldest son of converts to a new Protestant religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), whose members became known as Mormons. Josephs father Brigham Young would eventually become the leader of these people and assume responsibility for their safety and for the endurance and growth of their unique community during an initial period of extreme hardship and later, as they created a flourishing homeland out of a formidable desert wilderness. On August 5, 1875, when Joseph died at the young age of 40, his whole life had been defined by this circumstance of his birth." [From the author's introduction]
