"In this paper, I sing the virtues of Edward W. Tullidge, English convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, cultural enthusiast, and serious journalist and author. Tullidge, who was mercurial, changeable, and emotionally and perhaps mentally unstable, wrote despite his difficulties, churning out five long books, editing several periodicals, and contributing significant essays to others. Diligent and optimistic, he was a victim of his broad aspirations, falling short of what he might have done. Able, hard-working, and articulate, he was also a heavy drinker, given to emotional outbursts. Much of his work has been dismissed or ignored or ignored, valued primarily for the large chunks of undigested biographical material he included. I want to take him seriously." [Author's introduction]
