"This article examines the vital role of secular women's clubs in Utah public library development within the context of the cultural clash between Mormon and American societies and the redefinition of social and religious boundaries that led to the creation of a new secular culture in the state. It analyzes the interaction among the organized women's groups as they worked to establish free public libraries during this period of rapid and extreme change and the uses they made of that institution to aid in the establishment of an American secular order in the state."
