"From the beginnings of Mormonism in the early to mid-nineteenth century, the real-world, political Mormon problem has usually come before substantive Mormon political thinking. But it is nevertheless also true that Mormon political thought has not been only reactive and defensive. It also attempted to come to terms with political significance of the prophetic message of the Restored Gospel. As Mormons were defending themselves against charges of theocracy and insurrection, they were also building institutions and teaching social and political doctrines, which they understood as alternatives to worldly ideas and ways of life, and looking forward to a coming revolution that would be both spiritual and political. Mormon political thought had, and has today, a dual orientation, with both defensive and assertive postures. On the one hand, Mormon political theology has been apologetic: concerned with establishing articles of peace between Church and World, in part by negotiating modes of coexistence, in part by recognizing the hand of God even in the temporal, secular regime. On the other hand, Mormon political theology has also been prophetic: engaged in condemning the injustice and wickedness of worldly political orders and attacking their ideological self-understanding, while proclaiming the coming rule of Christ in the millennium. The main argument of this article is that the distinctive orientation or site of Mormon political theology is constituted by the difficult task of bringing together these quite different, but equally theological and equally Mormon kinds of political reflection."
