"This chapter takes a step beyond the current state of research by examining not only Church archives but also Ottoman archival documents. It places the Mormon missions within the larger context of the relationship of the Ottoman government to missionary activity, and also examines Mormon relations with native churches and other foreign missions. Current scholarship on Western missionary movements is engaged with the broader question of whether or not missionary activities had political dimensions that were a part of larger imperial projects. This study does not engage in this debate but instead examines the Mormon missions within the more 'fragile process of staking out claims of cultural and historical belonging to the biblical land.'"
