"When Lucretia Pepper Wightman put pencil to paper on April 14, 1895, as she prepared to leave Pima, Arizona for her home in Payson, Utah, she little knew the valuable document she was beginning. Like many other travelers who carried notebooks in their pockets, for the next five weeks she recorded how she fared on the journey and how she got along with others in her group, noting people she met along the trail and reporting what she saw and heard. Whether this was an unconscious 'hobby' or real interest, Lucretia was engaged with the natural world she passed through." [p. 95]
