During the 1850s, telegraph builders pushed to build a telegraph expressly for the U.S. Army to use in subduing the Mormons during the Utah War. However, the Mormons also wanted a telegraph line, and appealed to Congress in 1853. In 1861, Edward Creighton met with Brigham Young and the two agreed to build a telegraph line that would cover 500 miles of the Utah Territory. Seventy-five British immigrants were hired to help install the telegraph line.
