Chase investigates the motives behind the most infamous outbreaks of violence perpetrated by and against Mormons such as the Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857. He attributes this violent behavior to a lack of education and imagination, and a lack of outside interests between Mormons and non-Mormons in the nineteenth century.
