Chase chronicles the incidents involved in the Spencer-Pike affair, in which Ralph Pike fractured the skull of Howard O. Spencer and Spencer later murdered Pike. Chase particularly focuses on the character of these two men, how Spencer remained active and respectable in the Church long after the murder, and what legal options were available to victims of violence in the West at this time. The author wonders whether if we perpetrated the same crimes as Spencer, would we be justified?
