The author discusses the 1855 founding of the San Diego Coal Company by Mormon Ephraim Green and others such as George Warren Sirrine, Harvest Chester (H. C) Ladd, and Seth Benjamin Tanner. He emphasizes mine operations. The mine eventually failed due to difficulties in removing groundwater, and finding an efficient water pump. He also discusses exodus to Utah and public shares in the company.
