This article investigates the feud amongst U.S. military officers Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, Lieutenant Colonel John C. Fre?mont, and Commodore Robert Stockton in California during the Mexican War. In particular, the role of the Mormon Battalion and Lieutenant Colonel Philip St. George Cooke are discussed.
